New Life - New Career

Hello to all coffee lovers,

My name is Erin Saari and I could not be happier to tell you that I am the new “Social Media Manager” for The Artery Community Roasters!

From the age that I can remember up until about 4 1/2 years ago, I was an avid soccer player, I ran marathons, hiked mountains, I was a snowboarder, and was always up for an adventure, I absolutely loved traveling the world. I was a firefighter and landscaper. Every job that I had throughout my life was physically demanding and I loved it because I was making money and getting a workout in at the same time. I always enjoyed working hard and playing hard. Fast forward to today, and I’m a quadriplegic, learning to do life again - in a new way.

August 7, 2016, my life changed forever after diving into a pool and breaking my neck, causing a high level spinal cord injury, and the loss of all function and most sensation below my shoulders. Since then, with a lot of luck, determination and work, and the amazing staff at the QE2 hospital and Halifax Rehabilitation Centre, I was able to gain a lot of function back. I am nowhere close to where I was physically prior to the injury, but mentally, I believe I am stronger than ever.

Working for The Artery Community Roasters is exactly the type of job I was looking for after my injury. I knew that physical work was not in the cards, but working for a company that not only hires and advocates for the rights of people with disabilities, but also cares about the environment, and uses ethically sourced coffee beans is like a work dream come true. Life threw me a huge curveball, and I never thought I would be happy working from home on a computer, but I can definitely tell you all that I have a huge smile on my face. A huge thank you to Will, for giving me this amazing opportunity, and I am proud to be a part of The Artery Community Roasters family.

- Erin
